Entrance Depth Danger Alert: High

Q: Who are you guys?

A: We are berth paying members at the St Kilda Marina, and like many other members there have always wished there was a St Kilda Marina based club and website where members could socialise with each other and share ideas, experiences and thoughts on 'all things St Kilda Marina".

Q: Why have you set up this club?

A: Cause no-one else did. Unlike virtually every other boating club, yacht club and marina club we've ever come across anywhere (and for reasons we can't quite figure out), no-one has ever provided this sort of service, nor any ability for members to share information and interact with each other. After chatting with dozens of other members, it was their constructive comments and encouragement that inspired us to fill the void.

Q: What do you want to achieve with the St Kilda Marina Club?

A: We want to provide easy access to relevant boating information, and also provide a forum for members to discuss the things that effect us all as St Kilda Marina members. We also wish to encourage more interaction and socialising between members, and assist Marina Management to quickly and easily inform members with relevant marina information when the need arises.

Q: Why hasn't the marina itself ever set up a service like this?

A: Like we said earlier, we can't figure it out either. Over 90% of members we had spoken to supported our ideas so we decided to make SKMC a reality.

Q: How does St Kilda Marina stack up against the growing number of new marinas sprouting up across Port Phillip Bay?

A: Most of us reckon it's by far the best marina to be berthed at, (or we wouldn't be here). But in some ways, St Kilda Marina lags behind other marinas, and provides a lot less than what we believe we are entitled to expect as faithful paying members at Melbourne's best established and most expensive marina.

We believe that St Kilda Marina should and could easily be the best marina in Melbourne in every way, not just some.

Q: What do you think is the best thing about St Kilda Marina?

A: Location. Power up and in three minutes you are out on the Bay in the centre of Melbourne's water land! It's fantastic.

There are some awesome new marinas open or under construction up the Yarra River at Docklands, New Quay, Victoria Harbour, Y-Marine, etc - and none of these marinas have the entrance/exit depth problems we constantly experience at St Kilda Marina (see below) but all of these marinas require a slow (max 5kts or 10kts) shuffle down the river to the Bay, and then back again.

This adds around 60 minutes (down the Yarra and then back up again) to every trip that involves access to the Bay. If you live in one of the apartments up the Yarra it's great - car under building and boat 'out the back'. But if you don't, then it can quickly becomes a pain in the arse just to get out on the boat... We couldn't stand it.

Q: What's the worst thing about St Kilda Marina?

A: We can't speak for every St Kilda Marina resident, but the overwhelming observation we have heard from EVERY member we have spoken to is that there are actually three issues of most concern, and in order they are:.

1. The ongoing problems regarding depth at the entrance/exit to St Kilda Marina.
To be blunt, the depth situation at the marina exit/entrance is an ongoing major headache for members. Every boat owner at the marina holds his breath as he enters or exits the complex because adequate depths are simply not being maintained to an acceptable (or safe) level by Marina Management.

2. The dismal standard of Security.
Security at the Marina is poor and everyone including Marina Management knows it. Virtually every week, stuff is being stolen from our boats and storage lockers. The undeniable fact that these problems exist is clear proof that security at our marina is completely inadequate.

3. The complete lack of any Members Facilities.
There are no private members facilities provided whatsoever where members can go to the toilet or (after a hard day's boating) take a shower and freshen up, or sit down on a comfortable couch and hang out with other members or guests. None. There are toilet facilities and a shower cubicle provided in the public restrooms of the adjoining Great Provider restaurant, (which once was the members lounge and storagelocker area) but we don't really think having to tiptoe past the urinals or cubicles on your way to and from the shower really makes the grade...

Note: SKMC is encouraged to be able to report that following a recent very productive and cooperative get together with our Marina Manager and Members, it was made clear to us that Marina Management is aware of these concerns and is in the process of addressing these issues.

These issues, and others, are discussed in detail on our Bulletin Board, so we ask you to please register, and share your thoughts with the rest of us. We really would value your opinion, comments and suggestions on these, and any other important issues you think matter.

Q: Why should I join?

A: No-one said you should. But if you're a St Kilda Marina boat resident, and like us boating is an extremely important part of your life, and you're interested in keeping updated on our little boating community, making the most of your boating experience and gaining access to some very smart products aswell as receiving discounts offered by many of Melbourne's leading boat businesses then you're going to love this site, and it's well worth joining.

Q: How much does it cost to become a member?

A: $350 a year.

Q: What do I get for my money?

A: Click here and you'll find out.

Q: Can I advertise on this site?

A: Maybe. If you have products or services available that are 'life relevant' or that could assist our members to enhance their boating experience then you can. If you want to flog weight loss clinics or mobile phone ringtones, etc, we're not interested.

Q: What if I'm a member and would simply like to get the word out on what my business does?

A: That changes everything! Boaties like dealing with other boaties and we are happy to list you on our Members Network page at no charge. If you'd like to discuss a specific advertising campaign, we can talk about it. Click here for advertising information.

Q: Are there any other questions you think we might like to ask you?

A: No. But if you think of any, please let us know by email here.
