Entrance Depth Danger Alert: High

2007 ARCHIVES

SKMC Manager receives boat storage termination notice from Spooner's lawyers.

Marina Management is trying to destroy St Kilda Marina Club by terminating the boat storage of SKMC's Manager, Jack Jacobson. On behalf of our members, SKMC has sent over 6 letters to Greg Spooner during 2007 requesting information on critical issues such as the entrance depth problems and consequential damage sustained to many boats, lack of security and boat cleaning with regard to Stage 3A Water restrictions - yet we have never received even a single response from Spooner.

The only letter received from his office was a late payment letter in October. A response directly addressing this issue was immediately faxed to his office, yet again the only reply received was another demand for payment and threatening a 12% late charge fee. Another letter was faxed to Spooner's office requesting a response to the issues of the earlier letters faxed to him.

The next reponse from Spooner was to issue a letter via his lawyers terminating Jack's storage agreement, and giving him 7 days to vacate his berth. We're going to place all relevant information onto SKMC's website very soon so stay tuned for updates on this defining example of corporate thuggery.

Upgraded BBQ area looking hot!

Members of the marina now have exclusive use of the upgraded BBQ area near the Great Provider. There's plenty of seating, tables and cooking areas with shade provided by the beautiful palm tree. The BBQ itself is free to use for all residents.

New private members washrooms open for business.

We're delighted to report that the new marina members-only washrooms have been completed and are now open for 'business' and available to all marina residents. With access only via marina gate keys it's a really good improvement and SKMC would like to express our appreciation to Rollo of The Great Provider and Greg Spooner, General Manager of St Kilda Marina for providing these great new facilities.

Rollo has assured us that the signage indicating Female and "Male Members" was intentional! Hmmmmm...

Signs of the Times...

The "Extracts Relevant To Boats - Stage 3A Water Restrictions" signs recently attached to row gates by Marina Management have been ordered removed by South East Water. Embellished with SE Water's logo (see pic) these signs are not only unauthorised, the information displayed on them is incorrect with regard to large boats that cannot be transported to a commercial car wash facility.

"Morons" is how new member Bill described the situation. "Not only did they not provide any specific printed information to residents on restrictions thoughout the whole year, when they finally do, it's wrong. Typically, they didn't even be bother checking to see if there are other options for large boats, which as we now know from SKMC's site, there are..."

He's right. Though the signs are relevant to small boats that can be transported to a commercial carwash facility, they completely ignore relevant information pertaining to the maintenance and cleaning of large "untransportable" (by road) boats. All they apppear to have done was search SE Water's site for "boats" and copy that info to their signs.

To assist all marina residents in being aware of the facts regarding water restrictions, SKMC has created a specific Water Restrictions section on our website which provides accurate information direct from South East Water. SKMC has also previously offered to provide appropriate signage for row gates, however as usual we received no response from Marina Management...

Apart from the intention to provide accurate information to all marina residents, it is equally as important to inform members of the public as to what the legal rights are when it comes to cleaning large boats. Doing so will dramatically reduce the number of (often erroneous) public complaints being received by SE Water from passers-by and patrons at the restaurants who are themselves unaware of the facts. It should also eliminate the angry comments and abuse directed at boat owners through the fences by the misinformed public.

Of course, none of these issues would even exist had Marina Management actually completed the installation of the rain water tanks, (whose slabs were poured months ago) or provided a desalinator, both of which would have eliminated the need for the use of any fresh water whatsoever when maintaining our boats. SKMC again poses the question why, in the middle of the most serious drought for decades, and with severe water restrictions now impacting on all our lives, Marina Management has neglected to provide its own residents with any assistance to allow them to maintain their boats with no fresh water use at all.

NEWS FLASH: New Dredge Report Confirmed!

SKMC is delighted to be able to confirm yesterday's report on a new larger dredge to be permanently stationed at St Kilda Marina. This is exactly the solution that St Kilda Marina Club members have been asking Marina Management to provide throughout 2007, and members are ecstatic that the ongoing depth problems should soon be a thing of the past.

The dredge is expected to arrive within the next few weeks and is owned by South East Marine and Salvage who will operate the dredge when required. As usual, communications from Marina Management to residents is non-existent and we question why we first heard about this important news from other sources at a Chistmas party as opposed to the courtesy of being informed by Marina Management. We also wonder why they would allow marina residents to continue to stress over the entrance depth problems when they knew that a solution was imminent...

NEWS FLASH: Permanent larger dredge on the way?

Sources have told SKMC that Marina Management is in the process of procuring a larger dredge to be permanently stationed at St Kilda Marina. Reports indicate that the owners of the dredge "Lewinski" which is usually based at Frankston Creek and recently spent a few ineffective months at St Kilda Marina have been approached by Greg Spooner to source a larger dredge to be based at St Kilda Marina.

We can't confirm this exciting news nor supply any more details as yet, but as soon as we are able to provide additional information, we will. If these reports are accurate it would be a sensational improvement of the entrance depth fiasco that has plagued the marina for almost twelve months and resulted in hundreds of bottom strikes, dozens of groundings requiring tow-offs, and thousands of dollars of repair bills to boat owners.

Web-cam on lighthouse awaiting approval

St Kilda Boat Sales has announced that they are eagerly awaiting the approval of their Grant application to Marine Safety Victoria, to seek funding for the installation of a fully interactive Web-Cam on top of the Lighthouse at St Kilda Marina.

Marine Safety Victoria's, Boating Safety and Facilities Program is a government funded program that plays an important role in making boating safer and more accessible for all Victorians. Safety and Education is driving this initiative with users being able to visualize and assess boating conditions before embarking on the water, thereby focusing on trip preparation and safe boating practices.

SKMC would like to congratulate Darren from St Kilda Boat Sales for acting on our suggestion Re an interactive web-cam on the lighthouse, and we look forward to shortly being able to provide members, visitors and all interested parties access to this exciting and safety enhancing service - pending approval of this grant.

SKMC has however also received a considerable number of communications, via email, phone and in person from members, expressing concern at the wording of St Kilda Boat Sales announcement on their website which states that access to this (Govt funded safety enhancing service) "will be free and available exclusively through the St Kilda Boat Sales website to a limited number of pre-approved; weather, marine and safety stakeholders only".

SKMC member Tony: "What's with this "free access" and "pre-approved to a limited number of stakeholders" comment, and who are they implying gets to do the approval? Obviously if St Kilda Boat Sales is applying for a tax payer funded safety initiative grant, access must be made free and unfettered to all Victorians."

After consultation with MSV, and in line with their own "Terms and Conditons of Funding", we can confirm that:

* No commercial enterprise can charge for items or access to services funded by MSV or Victorian Government grants.
* Grants made via MSV are for the benefit of and ease of access of all Victorians, and that no private commercial enterprise can decide who may or may not be approved for access to Govt funded sfatey initiatives.

Stay tuned, and we'll keep you posted as new information arrives.

Marina left "De-fenceless" again.

As reported last week, the latest attack on boats at the marina saw St Kilda Boat Sales own boats severely damaged in a graffiti tagging attack whilst on their trailers, outside SBS's office. Since then, there has been a flurry of activity and last week, the entire fence along Marine Parade was replaced. We're not sure what the point was, because they seem to have replaced apples with apples. There is still no barbed wire along the top of the fence which everyone agrees would eliminate the ability of people to simply jump the fence, gaining them access to the car park, and members cars, let alone easier access to our boats.

Members have expressed their anger that the fence installers were unable to finish the job before they knocked off Friday night, and consequently they left a six metre section of the fence near the Great Provider - with no fence. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link - so thanks alot guys... Members are wondering why no attempt at all to provide temporary fencing over the weekend was implemented by Marina Management, or their chosen fence installers... As reported by one of the marina's own security guards, they didn't even bother to let them know they'd be pulling down the main front fence. "If they only told us what they were going to do, we could have organised extra security for the duration of the time the fence was down. How can they expect us to properly protect the marina when they don't even tell us that they're going to pull the fence down?"

This picture was taken at midnight last Friday 9th November. Note the missing fence behind the machinery which was left open all weekend.

Monday, 5th November 2007
More boats and Great Provider vandalised in graffiti attack.

Two more boats, and the Great Provider's building were damaged on Saturday night in another attack at the marina. The two boats belonging to St Kilda Boat Sales were graffitied as they sat on their trailers outside St Kilda Boat Sales' office and both boats sustained severe paint damage during the tagging spree.

This is the latest in a seemingly never-ending pattern of unauthorised entry by thieves and hooligans intent on nothing more than wanton damage of our property. The fact that they're getting in so often and so easily is absolute proof that security at St Kilda Marina is essentially useless. Marina Management can and should be held liable for allowing the antiquated standards of security to remain so ineffective. These are our boats that are being attacked and members are at a loss to understand why Marina Management is still dragging its feet and won't immediately implement a major security upgrade including barbed wire on all boundary fences, sensor lights and a CCTV camera system to record activity at the marina. Even if these improvements fail to prevent all attacks, (the guards from City Watch Security can't be everywhere at once) CCTV systems are a great deterent and would also give authorities the ability to view recordings of the events and possibly assist in identifying the culprits.

One of our members has correctly pointed out that the fence alongside Marine Parade is only around seven feet high, with no sharp metal points or barbed wire at all along the top. (see photos) This member tested the fence for himself and was able to easily and safely climb over the fence near SBS office and gain access to the marina in under five seconds... The security at St Kilda Marina is an absolute disgrace and Marina Management should be embarrassed at the pathetic standards they have, by their inaction allowed to continue.

There is an epidemic of break-ins, thefts and attacks on boats at the marina. SKMC asks the question: How many attacks on our boats is acceptable to Marina Management before they decide to fix the problem, implement the suggestions of their own new security company let alone adopt basic security standards of the 21st century - and show some bona-fide concern for the welfare of their fee paying residents' boats?

The critical issues of marina security, the ongoing entrance depth disgrace and options available to marina residents will be discussed in depth at our Members Bash this coming Friday night at the Great Provider, so if you care about these matters, we hope to see you there. There'll also be some great prizes and give-aways so don't miss out on a what's going to be an interesting and fun evening with like-mided boat owners.

Other important issues such as the possible installation of a desalinator allowing members to maintain their boats without the need to use any fresh water will also be on the agenda. If Sandringham, Marina YE and other marinas care enough about their residents - and the environment - to provide a desalinator, why doesn't Management at St Kilda Marina? (That was a rhetorical question. We all know the answer...)

St Kilda Boat Sales' Darren Finkelstein re-elected as a Director on BIA Board.

Dealer Principal and Co-Director of St Kilda Boat Sales and Service Centre, Darren Finkelstein has been re-elected by his industry peers, to be a Director on the Board of the Boating Industry Association (BIA-Vic) for a fourth year, representing the interests of all Victorian boat dealers. St Kilda Marina Club would like to congratulate Darren and remind members that SKMC is here to represent the interests of boat owners.

Mustang Marine Group going down.

Mustang Marine Group was placed into receivership on October 19 and the situation has deteriorated to the point where last week, the owner of the site sent in security guards and locked the gates. Mustang Marine Group CEO, Paul Scanlon, said the company had a 'healthy' cash balance, but had suffered from the high Australian dollar, overseas shipping costs and a shortage of skilled labour. He said plans to move production of some models offshore to offset costs and remain competitive had been rejected by the National Australia Bank resulting in the receivers being called in.

Marina Management considering CCTV cameras installation

Sources have told SKMC that Marina Management is considering the installation of CCTV cameras at St Kilda Marina. In line with systems already in use at many other marinas, these cameras not only record events in real time, but can easily be accessed via the internet allowing authorised users, such as boat owners to log in and view the marina in real time from anywhere in the world.

The installation of CCTV cameras would go a long way to improving security at the marina and also assist our security guards and authorities to monitor events - and more easily identify any suspects in future cases of break-in and thefts from boats, etc. SKMC members unanimously urge Marina Management to immediately install the CCTV system and other all possible measures that will result in the improvement of security at St Kilda Marina - thereby enhancing the security of all resident's boats.

As there is no management operated marina website in existence, SKMC is ready, willing and immediately able to provide the online setup if Management will install the cameras. 'Watch this space'.

Boat damaged in another break in.

Another boat on J-Row boat was severely damaged in a break in late last week. Electronics were smashed and items stolen. It's disappointing that despite the recent installation of automatic gate closers on row gates and the much higher standard of patrolling the marina is now receiving from our guards at recently appointed CityWatch Security, thieves are still able to get in to the marina, in most cases via J-Row, and in this case, get away.

For years, members have been calling for improved lighting and detection equipment for the entire marina, with a special emphasis placed on alleviating the major vulnerabilities experienced by members on J-Row as a result of its position alongside the park.

Automatic gate closers installed - FINALLY!!

Marina residents will be delighted (relieved?) to learn that after a seven month trial on Gates B & G, automatic gate closers have now been installed on all row gates. Hopefully the days of gates swinging open and the requirement of shooing away unauthorised persons off the rows have ended forever. Together with the recent 'changing of the guard' it's good to see that steps are finally being taken to improve the security at our beloved marina and we look forward to further enhancements.

Many members have expressed the desire for CCTV systems similar to many other marinas, where members can log onto the cameras on line and view their boats in real time. SKMC is ready, willing and able to provide the on-line setup immediately if Marina Management would install the camera infrastructure. "Watch this space!"

Flushed With Excitement! New members washroom facilities coming soon.

SKMC members and St Kilda Marina residents will be very happy to know that construction of the new members-only toilets and bathroom facilities is due to commence shortly as the Great Provider begins renovations. Rollo of the GP told SKMC that marina residents can expect completion of the upgraded facilities by late October. Considering the sorry state of Ladies and Mens facilities that residents have had to endure for years, it's great to see them finally being upgraded and we look forward to a new high standard of amenities for marina residents. Hopefully the men will no longer have to tiptoe past the public urinals on their way to the shower.

Thieves strike J-Row again. Punk arrested.

The marina's new security company Citywatch Security was instrumental in the apprehension of one of two thieves who broke into the marina around midnight last Monday night. Our excellent new security guard Ray (see earlier story) was doing his patrol lighthouse side when he heard noises coming from J-Row. Shortly thereafter in conjunction with a local Police patrol one of two offenders was arrested and will face charges.

The little bastards had broken into four boats on J-Row and stolen DVDs, alcohol and other items, as well as setting off a number of fire extinguishers they'd discovered on the victims boats. SKMC would like to express our sincere appreciation to Citywatch Security and in particular Security Guard Ray for their excellent response and for minimizing the damage these scum were able to cause before being scared off and in one case apprehended.

Members have expressed outrage that St Kilda Marina Management yet again did not deem this event worthy of notifying boat owners. They are our boats that are being broken into and we have a right to know about events that directly affect our property. We note despite of the existence of our Marina Notifications Page - which was created specifically to assist Marina Management (who don't even have email capacity) to inform and notify members as well as all other marina residents of any relevant issues, SKMC has only ever received one update from Marina Management (in March and only in response to a letter written by a boat owner).

From our perspective this is simply another example of the scorn constantly displayed by Marina Management to their customers. All residents should have been kept updated about the 5 months of depth problems we had to endure (and still are) as well as the fact that the marina had actually appointed a new security company (Finally!!). We question why if Marina Management is unable or unwilling to efficiently provide their residents with important information when required, why they refuse to allow St Kilda Marina Club to help them do it. For additional information on this subject see our Bulletin Board here.

The Changing of the Guard...

Marina Management has appointed a new security company, Citywatch Security, to provide guard patrol services at the marina and the improvement in security is already being noticed. Members have been reporting that over the last few days whilst on their boats or at the marina they have been approached by a guard who politely introduces himself and asks for some details to confirm their authorisation to be there. Bravo!

SKMC members have been unanimous in their support for this new hands-on approach to security and for the professionalism of security guard Ray. New signs have also been placed on all row gates stating that "These premises are under constant video surveillance." While we applaud this change and we appreciate the deterent effect of the signs wording, we're bewildered and disappointed that after more than seven months "trial period" of automatic gate closures on gates B and G, St Kilda Marina Management has still not installed the same on all other row gates. It's ridiculous and it makes a mockery of any attempts to actually improve security at the marina. For additonal information and members comments on these issues visit our bulletin board here.

SKMC is also looking forward to the implementation of additional security measures that we've heard are in the pipeline - and we'll keep you updated as new information comes to hand.

Boat Bunkers Inflatable Fenders released

Marine Solutions has released yet another innovative product. Boat Bunkers are a brilliant range of boat fenders designed to inflate in seconds when you need them - and deflate and stow in seconds when you don't. You can never have too many fenders but the fact is that they do take up a lot of space. Boat Bunkers allow you to carry as many fenders as you like without the hassle of taking up valuable storage space.

Taking only moments to inflate and deflate, available in a variety of colours and sizes and able to hang both vertically and horizontally, you'll wonder how you ever got by without them. They're the best new marine product we've seen for a while.

Dolphins are back!

Boaties were treated to a fantastic show yesterday around 500 metres from the entrance when a pod of dolphins got together with a flock of seabirds and gorged themselves on bait fish. The dolphins were leaping from the water and the birds were plummeting into the school of bait fish. A number of boats stopped to watch the amazing show and a great time was had by all species - except of course the bait fish...

The "Lewinski" is sucking!

After months of delays the dredge "Lewinski" is out at the entrance sucking away - and it's about bloody time. We're not sure how long it's going to take them to restore depth to acceptable and safe levels (nor how long the result will be maintained) but it's great to finally see them doing what (according to Management) was supposed to have started in May.

"This is not a hallucination. They're finally dredging. Hallellujah."

"Those St Kilda Marina Club flags - They're sprouting up like mushrooms!"

This was the recent comment of a St Kilda Marina employee to an SKMC member - and he's right. SKMC's flags are popping up everywhere and can now be seen happily fluttering on over 10 boats at St Kilda Marina (and on other boats at another 5 marinas around the bay) - and there are another dozen or so members at St Kilda Marina that have yet to fly their SKMC flag.

His description is appropriate for another reason as well when you consider Marina Management's handling of the ongoing entrance depth fiasco and row gate door closer saga - and the way we're all kept in the dark and fed bullshit.

Ciao Baby...

60's popstar Lynne Randell was given the send-off she wanted by friends, family and fans at a celebration of her life on Melbourne's St Kilda Beach on Saturday. Around 400 people, including many music stars, turned up to say goodbye to Lynne, who sadly took her own life in June. Amongst the familiar faces were Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, Brian Cadd and Russell Morris. Good friend and organizer of the send-off, Serge Thomann said "Lynne always filled a room and for the celebration of her life she filled the sky". He meant that quite literally. Following the ceremony on Port Phillip Bay, the skies were filled with fireworks to the sound of Gregory Lemarchal's version of 'Time To Say Goodbye'.

Note: Tragically, three days after farewelling his mother at St Kilda beach, Lynne's only son, Jamieson Hoch has now also gone. Jameison, who was 35, died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on Tuesday night, leaving a widow and two children, six-year-old Jacob and four-year-old Rachel.

Thieves strike again.

Thieves have again raided at least one row at the marina. Items stolen from F-row included boat mats and fenders. One member reported finding the gates to F and E rows open when he arrived around 9.30pm Wednesday night.

Considering the way marina management has been dragging its feet regarding any upgrade to security ie the installation of self closing mechanisms on all gates, we're not surprised. Predictably, Management's response to the issue of installing gate closing mechanisms was to install self closures on only two rows (Rows B and G) "for testing purposes" in February.

When SKMC contacted Greg Spooner recently for an update, we were informed that "one of the mechanisms we are testing has failed, so we'll just have to start the testing proceedure all over again." SKMC suggests that the proverbial finger be pulled out and that Management listens to the ovewhelming opinion of members (whose boats are the victims of the ongoing theft problems at the marina) and install gate closure mechanisms on all gates NOW. Note: St Kilda Marina Management has previously blamed "other members for much of the theft problems", but considering that unauthorised people have such easy access to rows (as gates are often left open and do not self close) we question this assumption.

For a comparison of various local marinas security setups, click here.

SKMC will shortly be posting a new section devoted entirely to the issue of security (or lack there of) at St Kilda Marina, so stay tuned.

"If they just stopped stuffing around and put closures on all gates like every other bloody marina has, then the ability of anyone (including the security guard in the pic - Ed) to leave gates open would be eliminated. Their argument that "some members like the convenience of being able to leave the gates open when they are taking stuff to their boats" is just bullshit. It's pathetic." Nick @ SKMC

Diesel slick hits marina

The marina suffered another diesel spill Sunday however the source remains unknown. Members noticed the slick moving in with the tide from the fuel depot area on Sunday. SKMC was told that an ambulance was called to the fuel depot side of the marina also on sunday afternoon but we can't confirm whether the two incidents were related. Thankfully, the rough weather over the last few days has helped dissipate the mess.

Boat sinks, crew rescued off Phillip Island.

Three elderly men have been rescued from a rapidly sinking boat after a maritime drama off southern Victoria. The men, all in their 80s, were travelling in their 12m fishing boat near Phillip Island when it was hit by a big wave early this morning and began taking on water. Police said an emergency call was received by the trio at 5.30am this morning, indicating the boat was sinking quickly despite bailing and that the engine has been crippled by the wave. A Water Police vessel recovered the men without incident and they are now recuperating in the port town of Hastings.

After months of delays, excuses, hold-ups and (you guessed it) more delays, the dredge is back and about to do what it does best. DREDGE. Zues is on the Loose!!

Mercury Marine has just unveiled its new (and long awaited) Zues drive system - and we like what we see! Zues uses a through hull pod system similar to Volvo's IPS drives, however unlike the IPS's forward facing duo-props, the Zues duo-props are rear facing.

Zues also utilises a joystick docking system which allows the operator to move the boat in any direction with the simple push or twist of a joystick. The Zeus’s Skyhook Electric Anchor utilizes a GPS signal to hold the boat on station. This can be very useful while waiting for a bridge opening or a space at the fuel dock. Fishermen will like the fact that they can automatically hold station over a wreck and fish without having to anchor. We'll bring you more information as soon as possible on this exciting new drive.

Many of our members have contacted us over the last few weeks requesting info on the strange looking unmarked ship that has been seen around the northern end of the bay. SKMC can report that the ship is in fact the New Zealand Navy's brand new Strategic Sealift Ship HMNZS Canterbury which is currently undergoing final sea trials. Strategic Sealift Ships incorporate cutting edge design to provide a state-of-the-art cargo and logistics platform.

The ship is the second NZ vessel to bear the name HMNZS Canterbury. The first ship has been decomissioned in NZ and in October will be sunk in the Bay of Islands to create that area's first artificial reef.

Two injured in channel pylon crash.

A fishing trip ended in drama for two East Geelong neighbours who suffered serious facial injuries and were rescued from their sinking vessel after smashing into a beacon off Limeburners Point early this morning. The men's 4.8m half cabin boat slammed into an unlit channel marker about 1km offshore from Limeburners Point just after 5am, sparking a rescue effort involving Coastguard volunteers, police and a recreational fisherman and his teenage daughter.

The men, aged in their early 30s, raised the alarm by calling 000 on a mobile phone. They managed to tie the sinking boat to the navigation mark and one of the men lit a red distress flare. Victorian Regional Channels Authority recovered the fibreglass boat and towed it to shore. The authority's chief executive, Captain Peter McGovern, expressed his sympathy to the two men and said the authority was undertaking a complete replacement of all the channel beacons.

Members Bash goes off!

St Kilda Marina Club's inaugural Members Bash was held last Friday night and over 35 people attended with a great time had by all. The open fire was crackling, there was plenty to drink and the snacks provided by The Great Provider were sensational. It was a great opportunity to discuss issues affecting marina residents and boating stuff in general. Things began to wind down around midnight with most attendees continuing the party on their boats. Stay tuned for info on SKMC's next Members Bash. SKMC would specifically like to thank Rollo of The Great Provider for his enthusiasm and fantastic service and support.

Marina redevelopment in the works.

SKMC has learned that a major marina redevelopment is being planned by Management. Considering the way the existing marina is currently being managed, we're curious as to whether any upgrades or strategy will be adopted to resolve issues of concern to existing marina residents. For more info on this subject see our Bulletin Board - access to BB is Members Only.

St Kilda Web Cam upgraded.

The St Kilda Live Web Cam has been upgraded with faster streaming and an enhanced picture quality. The new camera allows much better vision of the water conditions towards the marina entrance. Click here for St Kilda Cam.

Whales spotted in Port Phillip Bay

Two whales, thought to be Humpbacks, were spotted off the beach at Dromana over the weekend, according to a spokesman from the Department of Sustainability and Environment. Senior wildlife officer Glenn Sharp said the whales appear to be in Port Phillip Bay for a feed after a trip down Australia's east coast. "Having them in the bay this time of year is not uncommon. They've been regular visitors for at least the past six years."

Mr Sharp said the pair appears to be a mother and a calf, and they were initially spotted at the beginning of last week off the coast of Queenscliff. Mr Sharp said he is not sure how long the whales will stay in the bay, but he asked the public to keep their distance from the creatures. "We ask people to keep their distance. Not to hinder or harass them," he said. Mr Sharp suggested that members of the public should keep a distance of at least 300 metres between themselves and the whales.

No news is bad news Re dredging.

Entrance dredging has still not begun. We don't really know what else to say. Interested parties might like to contact Marina Management on 9534-0448 for this week's excuse. Note: Entrance depth at 10.30am today was 2.3 feet.

Bloody Volvo Ocean Race Dumps Melbourne

Melbourne's major events calendar has suffered a blow, with the Volvo Ocean Race sailing from the city. The world's premier round-the-world race, which stopped at Docklands for the first time last year, poured $27 million into the city's economy and around 335,000 people visited the super yachts at Docklands' Waterfront City. A huge worldwide TV audience also tuned in. The Victorian Major Events Company made a bid to host a stopover for the 2008-09 race but was beaten by Asia.

"It's to do with sponsorship and more money," a VMEC spokeswoman said. "A decision was made by Volvo Event Management to take the race to China and South-East Asia for commercial reasons. "The competing yachts wanted to go somewhere they would get a better return." Under a new route, teams will visit Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America, North America and Europe, but will skip Australia. Australia will not enter a yacht in next year's race.

Explosive proposal sinks cruiser.

A romantic cruise which was supposed to end in a marriage proposal went way off course over the weekend when the borrowed boat the couple were on burst into flames. Nathan Smith, 31, had planned to propose to girlfriend Jessica Charlesworth, 21, during the cruise on a friend's motor cruiser on Port Phillip Bay. But the couple were forced to abandon ship when a fire started in the galley. The couple escaped unharmed but the boat and the engagement ring are now at the bottom of Port Phillip Bay. Mr Smith intended to go ahead with popping the question last night. No news on the condition of the boats owner...

Entrance Depth Problem Sinks To New Lows.

The depth situation at St Kilda Marina has now become dangerous with boats regularly running aground whilst trying to exit or enter the marina. This creates even more potential for disaster as other boats are forced to veer to either side of the stranded vessel to avoid collision. Compounding this unacceptable state of affairs is the fact that despite advice from marina management over a month ago that the red marker buoy at the entrance would shortly be returned to its position, it is still conspicuous by its absence.

According to information SKMC has received from City of Port Phillip and Parks Victoria, all required permits for dredging have been granted so we are at a loss as to why marina management has again allowed this pathetic state of affairs to continue.

Any boat owners who have sustained damage to their craft as a result of running aground at the entrance are asked to contact SKMC asap here.

*** On Saturday, this Caribbean 40 Fly-Bridge required a Coast Guard tow after becoming stuck fast in the entrance.

Bollards Locked.

The bollards at the north entrance to the main parking area alongside Marine Parade have been fitted with padlocks to prevent unauthorised vehicle entry. Marina residents keys will unlock the bollards. Members are requested to always replace and relock the bollards.

Boaters to make a Splash!

Boaters are invited to be part of a unique experience that will also make a positive difference to the quality of life of special needs children in Victoria. Variety’s inaugural fundraising water event, the 2008 Variety Splash, planned for February 2008, will see boats cruise around Port Phillip Bay in a three day event, cruising from Waterfront City to Mornington Yacht Club, Geelong and then back to Waterfront City. The Variety Splash will be the on water equivalent of the infamous Variety Bash which is held on land.

While the focus is firmly placed on having fun, the Splash has a serious side with the primary objective of raising money for children in our community with a wide range of special needs. By taking part in this wonderful social event, not only will boaters have the time of their life but will be instrumental in helping bring sunshine into the lives of many very special children. St Kilda Marina Club is proud to support this outstanding event, and we encourage all other boaters to get involved!

The official launch of the event will be on Wednesday May 23, 2007 at the Skydeck, Eureka Towers. Boaters are invited to register to attend the launch by visiting www.varietysplash.org.au or contact leisurecorp on 9642 1227.

The Dredging Issue - SKMC takes a deeper look.

St Kilda Marina Club has received advice from City of Port Phillip that a new arrangement is being put in place which should shortly allow dredged to begin without the need for barging. Sand is to be again pumped up onto the beach area between the marina exit and Brooks Jetty, however this sand will now be shifted further north to renourish the beach area between Donovans and The Stoke House.

To ensure the quality of the beach during the summer months, this procedure will only be allowed during beach "quiet months" from May to October and Council stresses that alternative arrangements will have to be implemented by marina management during the peak beach use months from November to April.

Over the Jan-Dec period, depth levels at St Kilda Marina became so shallow that boats were regularly running aground and there was even talk of the marina being closed out of safety concerns. City of Port Phillip allowed marina management to do an emergency dredge back onto the breakwater as there was not sufficient time to organise barging facilties.

Members will no doubt be aware that the depth situation is again extremely serious. (see previous News articles) SKMC is hopeful that marina management will shortly begin dredging and will use the next six months to develop and put in place a regular dredging program that will ensure the depth problems experienced over the last five or so months will not reoccur again in the near future, nor next summer.

Marina Entrance Dredging Delayed.

SKMC has been advised by Marina Management that the imminent dredging reported last week has now been delayed till mid May. Compounding the depth problem is the fact that the red marker buoy near the entrance has still not been replaced after snapping its chain last week. At least 5 boats hit bottom on Anzac Day with one yacht coming to a complete stop. Depth sounder reports were as low as 2.4 feet. Members are again strongly advised to consult tidal charts and exercise extreme caution when entering or exiting the marina.

Weather Info Tools Page Updated!

Though St Kilda Marina Club is primarily concerned with the weather around Port Phillip Bay, you can now check the current weather and forcast for any location in Australia. If you're planning a trip or you're simply curious as to the weather in Cootamundra, it's all just a click away!

Er... All we can say is 'Gee!'

An SKMC member emailed us these two pictures taken last Thursday of the sign currently displayed near the fuel bowsers. The good news is that dredging should be commencing this week. The bad news is that the red marker buoy at the entrance snapped its chain last week. It has been retrieved by marina staff and should be back in place shortly. SKMC advises members to take extreme caution when exiting and entering the marina.

Bay Fuel Watch tops 1,000 hits.

The popularity of our new Bay Fuel Watch has rocketed over the last two weeks and SKMC is proud to announce that the BFW section of our site has now received well over 1,000 hits. SKMC has now received over 100 emails and messages from boat owners across the bay letting us know just how much they like this feature. SKMC member John emailed us to report that he had just saved over $350 on his last fill. The system is working!

Monster Stingray cruises the Marina.

Since Monday, a number of Marina residents have reported seeing a huge Stingray slowly cruising the Marina between rows D,E & F. One estimate put its width at around five feet. For reasons obvious to everyone, SKMC advises that no attempt should be made to harass it in any way and request that all boat owners take a little more care when entering or exiting their berths. One eyewitness reported that it had large black marks on its back and tail. Hopefully these are simply markings and not the result of a collision with someone's props.

Bay Fuel Watch 'a gas' say boaters!

Since SKMC unveiled our Bay Fuel Watch last week, this section has quickly become one of the most popular destinations on our site. SKMC has received over 35 emails from boat owners across the Bay congratulating us for providing this feature. After all, if you're filling up with 500+ litres, and can save $0.25 cents a litre, that's a saving of well over $100!! SKMC has also upgraded the Bay Fuel Watch System to reflect price changes over last week's prices.

During April, our Bay Fuel Watch is free to the public, however as of May it will revert to Members Only access. As one boatie pointed out in his email to SKMC "The money I can save on two fills is more than the annual membership fee at St Kilda Marina Club. It's a great deal!"

SKMC Bay Fuel Watch is Here!

SKMC is pleased to announce the introduction of our new Bay Fuel Watch System. Every week SKMC will contact the Bay's five main fuel resellers and we'll tell you exactly where the Bay's cheapest fuel prices are for Regular Unleaded, Premium Unleaded and Diesel.

SKMC will also be turning the mundaneness of fueling your boat into a social occasion by organising regular Armada Fuel Runs to the cheapest locations. You can check out other marinas and enjoy a glass of vino and some nibblies while your boat is being fuelled. Click here if you'd like more info or wish to be alerted to upcoming AFRs.

SKMC goes cruising with two Princesses!

As we recently reported, yesterday Melbourne played host to the Sapphire Princess and also her smaller sister the Pacific Princess.

Four SKMC members boats cruised over to Station Pier last night for a farewell cruise with the Sapphire Princess. Conditions were perfect and SKMC members escorted this amazing ship down the channel for around 10kms before members blew their horns, waved goodbye and headed back to Beacon Cove for 'refreshments'. The sound of her horns was awe-inspiring and we're sure that explains members headaches.

Repeat Performance by SKMC's Fishing Guru!

Let's face it, the guy's a freak! A month to the day after we reported that Nick from F-Row had pulled in a big Flathead right off the back of his boat while moored in his berth, on Saturday he caught its daddy in the same place - and this one was a monster. We're happy to report that after the obligatory photos were taken, Nick gently popped it back over the side where it swam away, hopefully to come on back another day.

"I'm a responsible fisherman and it's because I love my fishing that I always throw the breeders back" said Nick. SKMC applaudes Nick's attitude and encourages others to adopt the same high standards when it comes to protecting our precious fishing stocks and resources.

Note: Despite the concerns of some regarding water quality within the marina, the fact is that the Marina is teeming with fish. This seems to support advice to SKMC that despite its usual murky appearance, the water in the marina is actually in very good condition.

Jeepers! Now that's what we call Parking!

The owner of this Jeep had a nasty surprise when he returned to his vehicle recently. Obviously forgetting the existence of tides, he parked his vehicle high and dry only to return as the right side of his Jeep began to disappear under the water. Entering through the passenger door, he made a sheepish exit to a stiring round of applause from amused onlookers and marina members. We appreciate the suggestion by an SKMC member for the marina to paint "DO NOT PARK HERE" on the ramps below the high watermark line in bright yellow flouro paint.

Marina buzzed by F-18 Hornet!

Members at St Kilda Marina were treated to an awesome flying display on Saturday and Sunday as an RAAF F-18 Hornet vectored towards the Grand Prix at Albert Park by using St Kilda Marina as an overfly reference. Members reported seeing the plane perform a complete 180 degree turn whilst flying over the confines of the marina and the sound as deafening! The marina was also buzzed a number of times over the four day event by two Army Blackhawk helicopters.

Marina Management congratulates SKMC for "a job well done".

Yesterday around half a dozen SKMC members got together with Marina Manager Greg Spooner at the Great Provider for an informal chat about St Kilda Marina and the formation of St Kilda Marina Club. The mood was very upbeat and what was supposed to be a 15-20 minute chat turned into a two hour "brain-fest" where great ideas flowed freely and all agreed that exciting times lie ahead for our beloved marina.

Issues discussed included the formation of the St Kilda Marina Club, security at the marina, the entrance depth situation, members facilities and the desire of many members to enhance our marina's community spirit and foster greater interaction and communication between members, and also between members and Management.

It was also a great opportunity for SKMC members to hear about Greg's plans for the Marina's future and all appreciated his support and encouragement. Everyone in attendance unanimously agreed that this get together should only be the first of many and SKMC will have more news on the various issues discussed in the near future.

Greg commented that SKMC's ability to quickly and efficiently pass on marina information to members was a great idea and that Marina Management would make full use of the Marina Notifications page to get info out to members when required.

SKMC would like to thank Greg for his time and Rolo and The Great Provider for their assistance and hospitality at such short notice.

Meet two sexy Princesses in one day!

Monday, 26th March is going to be one hell of a day for SKMC cruise ship afficianados. Two of the world renowned Princess Cruises flagships, Sapphire Princess and Pacific Princess are going to be in town and berthed at Station Pier on the same day! (We're also at a loss as to how they're going to fit them and the Spirit of Tasmania all in there...)

Two of the worlds pre-eminent cruise ships in Melbourne on the same day is a very rare event and weather permitting, SKMC is planning Armada Runs out to greet - and also back out again to farewell both ships. Captain Stubing won't be there (and don't hold your breath for Gofer and Isaac either) but this is a great opportunity for those interested in these awesome floating palaces to join the party, enjoy a great adventure and social event, and help make our cruise ship guests Melbourne visit unforgettable.

Arrival times are within an hour of each other and departure times later same day are two hours apart so it's going to make things very easy. You won't know which way to look! SKMC members are invited to join the festivities and bookings are essential. By the way, if the weather lets us down, we'll all be retiring to the Gazebo at The Great Provider for 'consolation drinks'.

Click here to register your interest, and we'll keep you posted.

Riva gives marina members a rude awakening.

Members blissfully asleep on their boats Sunday morning around 7.00am were rudely awakened when some idiot from Riva decided to blare talk back radio through the loud speakers as they worked on the veranda. A SKMC member went over to investigate (and to tell them to turn the damn radio off) and was threatened and abused by the person responsible. Another member then also came up and demanded that the noise be turned off at which time the noise stopped. SKMC will be discussing this event with Riva Management this week and we'll keep you informed.

Lost buoy gone!

Mornington Yacht club has retrieved their buoy. Godspeed and good riddens.

We can see the light!

SKMC is 'delighted' to report that the gate lights at row entrances have been upgraded and all are now functioning properly. The folks on F-Row will be happy to say goodbye to the flickering disco effect that has been happening with their gate light for the last two years. It might only be a first small step towards improving security at the marina, but it's a good small step, and it's headed in the right direction. We'd like to suggest self closing springs on all gates as the next.

But what members really want to see is a couple of giant leaps. SKMC encourages Marina Management to keep going!

Lost Buoy Found!!

Mornington Yacht Club buoy reunited with family.

Many of our members have reported a close encounter (of the irritating kind) with the big red ugly buoy that has been stranded at the Beacon Cove jetty at Station Pier for the last few weeks. Apparently the long lost marker escaped from it's mooring during a storm around the 4th of February, and some how made its way from Mornington all the way to Beacon Cove.

We presume that it was discovered somewhere near Station Pier, and somebody has towed it in and tied it up, but despite enquiries we still can't tell you who 'saved the day' for MYC. We'll keep you posted. The good news is that SKMC has contacted MYC and they have confirmed that "Nobody told us, but now that you mention it, we are missing a buoy!"

Hopefully over the next few days, they'll come down and get it the hell out of there...

Nick Does It Again! In the Marina!

SKMC's resident fishing guru Nick from F-Row has done it again. Not content with last week pulling in the largest Schnapper we've seen in a long time (see earlier story) he's now pulled in a very nice Flathead - right off the back of his boat while moored at the marina!

Saturday, 17th February 2007
They're Back, They're BIG!! And they're biting!

Sensational Schnapper catches are being reported on Port Phillip Bay.
Nick from F-Row has generously sent us a pic of his awesome catch last Friday night.

H-Row ripped off. Theft @ marina worse than ever.

The boys down on H-Row are not a very happy bunch. The serious and ongoing problem of theft from boats at the marina has reached new heights with a rampage by thieves up and down H-Row last week. This is just the latest example of what can only be described as totally useless security at the marina, and members are increasingly fed up with the current situation.

Having investigated the security situation at the marina, SKMC gives Marina Management a big thumbs down when it comes to providing adequate levels of security. Security patrols are infrequent and most of the guards we have observed seem only interested getting to the end of the row, swiping their log sensor and then leaving. Amazingly, we have seen guards continually leaving the row gates open when they enter, and then closing them a minute or so later when they leave. (so much for 'security') This makes us ask why row gates are (still) not self closing?

Incredibly, some irresponsible (neglegent?) members are compounding the problem by jamming the gates open to allow entrance or exit by friends or others who are not marina members. This is simply inexcusable conduct by those who not only should know better, but who's actions are increasing the risk for all of us. See our Bulletin Board here for full information on the vital subject of Marina Security.

Going The Full Monte at the Marina.

Over the last few months members may have noticed the proliferation of Monterey Sports Cruisers now berthed at St Kilda Marina. A Monterey 350 Sports Cruiser quietly slipped into berth recently bringing the total number of Montereys at St Kilda Marina to four. This Florida based company is turning heads, and more importantly cheque books with their stunning range of Sports Cruisers and Deck Boats. You really have to hand it to the Yanks when it comes to building boats - and Australian manufacturers could learn a thing or fifty from their American competitors when it comes to quality and fitouts.

The convenience of extra stereo remote controls might be optional on Aussie boats but they come as standard on the Montereys. We counted two of them on the 302's and more on the 350.

Where's My Karcher? Storage Lockers raided on F-Row.

The theft or a Karcher High Pressure Water Cleaner is just one of a spate of ongoing thefts infruriating St Kilda Marina Members. Tomek from F-Row is the latest victim. "I put it a storage compartment for one night without a locking it and some bastard steals it." said Tomek. "I'm sick and tired of the pathetic state of security here at the marina, and management hasn't done a thing to improve the situation."

Editor's Note: When we contacted Marina Management for comment we were told: "It's not our fault. The problem is actually members stealing from other members." Considering the totally ineffective security at the marina, and the ease in which the public can gain access to not only the car park, but also marina rows, we sadly have no alternative but to seriously question Marina Management's commitment to providing acceptable levels of security to members. See our Bulletin Board here for full information on the vital subject of Marina Security.

Australia Day celebrations to go off with a (whole lot of) bangs!

Ok, so things aren't perfect here in Oz, but where the hell is? But if you bother to read the paper, or watch the news, or have even half a brain, you'll appreciate the fact that all in all, Australia is without a doubt the safest, cleanest, most laid-back and open-minded place to call home.

When the biggest current problem for most of us is the issue of water shortages and the irritation and inconvenience of water restrictions, and you compare our way of life to those poor bastards in Iraq, (or Sudan, or Tibet, or France, or Korea, or Cuba, or Indonesia) and virtually every other country on the planet, we think you'd agree that Australia really is The Land of Oz. Today's the day to reflect on this great country, celebrate it and give thanks for our way of life and the fact that we are lucky enough to live here.

Entrance Depth Standard @ Marina reaches new lows. (Or should we say highs...)

"It's a $#@%ing disgrace", says Gary from F-Row. "My Bertie is by no means one of the larger boats at the marina, but I am scraping the bottom everytime I come through the entrance." SKMC is not sure exactly how many members have been experiencing the same problems navigating the entrance but we know of at least a dozen members who have all reported that "it is for all intents and purposes impossible to get in or out at the moment without hitting the bottom."

Marina Management has recently (and belatedly) placed signs at row gates informing members of the depth problem which they blame on "circumstances beyond their control." SKMC is investigating the circumstances behind this issue. We have spoken to Marina Management and City of Port Phillip and will be reporting back as soon as we have ascertained the facts behind this crucial issue.

It's New Years Eve!!!! Best wishes from St Kilda Marina Club.

Happy New Year! As we enter the new year we'd like to take this opportunity to wish all our members, friends, supporters and advertisers and great year in 2007. We hope you'll have many great boating times ahead in 2007.

We're excited about the future and are confident that 2007 will be a pivotal year for St Kilda Marina Club, and for the marina itself - and we promise to do everything we can to promote and encourage St Kilda Marina's transformation into the best damn marina (in everyway) that Melbourne has to offer. We wish you Calm Blue Oceans. Take care out there!
